One mare, one day, two winners
The 13-year-old mare Run Kaitlyn Run had two daughters win on last Thursday’s Golden Gate Fields card. Runninismygame won her debut in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden race for 2-year-old fillies, and Sheza Trip rallied to win a one-mile claiming race on turf.
Both fillies are owned and bred by Patricia Ford, trained by Bill Delia, and were ridden by Ricardo Gonzalez.
“That was pretty amazing,” Delia said. “It was a very good feeling for me, knowing it was for Patricia. She has been with me for a long time, and Run Kaitlyn Run had to be put down after having her last foal. He’s just a baby, and we still have him.”
Delia trained Run Kaitlyn Run for Ford. She won 2 of 6 starts and was being prepared for a turf race when a leg injury ended her career.
“When I was asked if she could become a broodmare, I said, ‘She’s a keeper,’ ” Delia said. “And she’s produced nothing but winners.”
Runninismygame is a full sister to the stakes-placed Game to Run, and Delia thinks she could follow in her sister’s footsteps.
“We think the 2-year-old can really run, and she showed her ability,” he said. “Sheza Trip has had her issues, but she’s a hard knocker.”
Baze third in jockey challenge
Because of scratches caused by rain, Russell Baze wound up riding only one of his four scheduled mounts in the Xpressbet Hall of Fame Jockey Challenge last Friday at Pimlico. Still, with the points earned from that one mount, he tied Alex Solis for third in the competition.
John Velazquez, who had mounts in all four races, won the event, with Kent Desormeaux second. Calvin Borel, Edgar Prado, and Mike Smith also competed.
