One Fast Broad gets up late in Soviet Problem Stakes

CYPRESS, Calif. – The California-bred 2-year-old fillies are sorting themselves out this fall.
In Saturday’s $101,725 Soviet Problem Stakes going a mile at Los Alamitos, One Fast Broad closed from last of 10 to win by three-quarters of a length over Spiced Perfection. At Del Mar on Nov. 3, One Fast Broad finished a length in front of Spiced Perfection in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies at seven furlongs.
One Fast Broad ($4.20) was favored on Saturday and was ridden confidently by jockey Corey Nakatani. Nakatani began urging One Fast Broad into contention with three furlongs remaining. Turning into the long stretch, One Fast Broad was seventh while racing wide, but had advanced to second with a furlong remaining.
One Fast Broad was timed in 1:38.26 in her first start around two turns.

“I felt she was the best horse in the race,” Nakatani said. “You have to make sure she runs her race in her style.
“I knew she wanted to go two turns.”
Twisted Rosie (8-1) set an early pace of 24.15 seconds for the opening quarter-mile, and 48.26 for a half-mile. Spiced Perfection (5-2) was second for the first six furlongs before taking the lead in early stretch. Spiced Perfection finished four lengths clear of Twisted Rosie, who held third.
Empress of Lov finished fourth, followed by Pulpit Rider, Neon Gypsy, Bella Style, Ismelucky, Carpathia, and My Claw.
Spiced Perfection won the Generous Portion Stakes at six furlongs at Del Mar on Aug. 30, a race that did not include One Fast Broad. Trainer Brian Koriner expressed frustration after Saturday’s race that Spiced Perfection has been a target for One Fast Broad in her last two starts – and been caught.
“Hopefully, she’ll go into open company,” Koriner said of One Fast Broad.
Owned by Mick and Wendy Ruis and trained by Mick Ruis, One Fast Broad has won 3 of 5 starts and earned $229,000. She is unbeaten in three starts on dirt, including a maiden race at Del Mar in August. On turf, One Fast Broad has raced twice against open company, finishing second in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf in September, and fourth in the Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita in October.
Ruis said before Saturday’s race that One Fast Broad will be considered for the $200,000 California Cup Oaks at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Feb. 19.
