One and Twenty a fresh danger

Mike Welsch|Apr 04, 2003

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - One and Twenty and Fortuitous have a lot in common. The two fillies are undefeated on turf, won divisions of Woodbine's Natalma Stakes at 2, and return from winter vacations to launch their 3-year-old campaigns in Sunday's $75,000 Via Borghese Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

The Via Borghese drew a field of 10 3-year-old fillies and will be run at 1 1/8 miles on turf.

One and Twenty was 2 for 2 on grass last season but has not started since closing out her campaign finishing third over the main track in Aqueduct's Miss Grillo Stakes Oct. 27.

"I think on turf this could be a pretty serious horse," trainer Rick Violette said. "I thought she'd handle the dirt okay, too, but after her last couple I won't do that again."

One and Twenty was an impressive 1 1/4-length winner of her grass and two-turn debut at Saratoga

Aug. 4. She returned five weeks later to win the first and faster division of the one-mile Natalma by 1 3/4 lengths. She covered the distance in 1:35, which was more than a second quicker than Fortuitous needed to win her division.

"She's trained well and is as ready as you can have them without putting all your eggs in one basket and breaking them in two the first time back," Violette said.

Fortuitous also won her maiden at Saratoga, then rallied from far back to win her division of the Natalma. She tried dirt for the first and only time in the Grade 1 Frizette, but was never a factor, finishing far behind division leader Storm Flag Flying; One and Twenty finished fourth.

Gal O Gal and Formal Miss, who exchanged decisions in the Herecomesthebride and Gaily Gaily Stakes, will meet for the third time in the Via Borghese.

Gal O Gal put the finishing touches on a four-race win streak when she outfinished Formal Miss by a half-length in the Grade 3 Herecomes-thebride. Formal Miss came out on the short end of a close finish once again when beaten a neck by Devil at the Wire in the Gaily Gaily with Gal O Gal rallying to finish third.

Sweettrickydancer returns for the first time since having her four-race win streak snapped in the Herecomesthebride.
