Om under consideration for Mathis Brothers Mile

Om, the winner of two derbies on turf earlier this year and the third-place finisher in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar last Saturday, could make one more start this year. Trainer Dan Hendricks said he is considering running Om in the $200,000 Mathis Brothers Mile for 3-year-olds on turf on Dec. 26.
“That kind of money is nothing to sneeze at,” Hendricks said.
Hendricks said he has the $400,000 Frank Kilroe Mile on turf at Santa Anita on March 12 as a long-term goal for Om, who races for K.B. Sareen. A start in the $200,000 Arcadia Stakes at a mile on turf on Feb. 13 is a possibility.
Om won the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby in September and the Grade 2 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita in October. The 4-5 favorite in a field of 14 in the $302,250 Hollywood Derby, Om stalked pacesetter Acceptance before taking the lead in the stretch. Om was caught in the final sixteenth and finished third behind upset winner Chiropractor and the New York shipper March, losing by a head and a half-length.
Om showed a different style in the Hollywood Derby by not setting the pace.
“He’s been acting like he’ll rate and that was nice to see,” Hendricks said. “He ran his heart out.”
Om has won 4 of 9 starts and earned $430,500.
