Om jumps to top of division
DEL MAR, Calif. – Om vaulted to the forefront of California’s 2-year-old male division with an emphatic maiden race win in his second start Saturday.
Ridden by Fernando Perez, Om led throughout 6 1/2 furlongs, pulling away to win by 7 1/4 lengths in 1:15.75. He earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 97. Om will start in the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity over seven furlongs Sept. 3, trainer Dan Hendricks said.
By Munnings, Om was fifth in his debut at Santa Anita in June.
“I knew he’d improve, and he’s trained well, but I don’t think you can expect that kind of race, not against that kind of field and the way he drew off,” Hendricks said. “That was very impressive.”
Long Hot Summer, a 2-year-old California-bred filly, is likely to run in the $150,000 Generous Portion Stakes for Cal-bred fillies Aug. 27 after winning her debut in a maiden race over 5 1/2 furlongs Saturday. Ridden by Joe Talamo, Long Hot Summer closed from fifth in a field of nine.
By Street Boss, Long Hot Summer races for Anthony Fanticola and Joseph Scardino. She was the $260,000 sale topper at the Barretts May Sale of 2-year-olds in training.
“She’s still figuring things out,” trainer Phil D’Amato said. “When she came back she couldn’t blow out a match. She’s got so much ability. Hopefully later, she’ll go long.”
** The stakes winners Irish Surf and Majestic Harbor worked Sunday in advance of the $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 24.
Irish Surf, the winner of the Cougar II Handicap over 1 1/2 miles July 25, worked six furlongs in 1:13. Majestic Harbor, who won the Gold Cup at Santa Anita on June 28, worked seven furlongs in 1:26.40.
The Pacific Classic is the richest race of the meeting. The list of candidates includes Shared Belief, the undefeated champion 2-year-old male of 2013, and Game On Dude, who won the 2013 Pacific Classic.
