Breeding can be a mysterious game, and while there were high hopes for the now-retired Olivier, the full brother to 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline, he didn’t deliver, finishing unplaced in three starts. “It became obvious, once he was in training, that he wasn’t his brother,” said Jane Lyon, who bred the 4-year-old Tapit gelding in the name of her Summer Wind Equine, and who raced him with partners WinStar Farm and Siena Farm. The connections considered parting ways with the gelding – entering him in the Keeneland April horses of racing age sale at the April 1 deadline for the print catalog to keep that option open. He was then entered for a $100,000 claiming tag on April 17 at Keeneland after his two fruitless maiden special weight starts at Oaklawn. A claim was put in for the gelding, who finished fourth despite losing a shoe, but it was voided. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! Join DRF Bets. The claim was “voided by the state vet because the horse lost a shoe and grabbed his lateral heel at the same time,” trainer Rodolphe Brisset reported on social media. “Horse is back in our barn sound and safe, and future will be discussed between the ownership.” After those discussions between the three partners, Olivier was scratched from Keeneland April, and Lyon brought the gelding back to his birthplace, Summer Wind in Georgetown, Ky., to live alongside her other retirees. “I feel like breeders need to be responsible for what they bring into this world,” Lyon said in her social media posts announcing the retirement. Olivier is out of the Indian Charlie mare Feathered, a Grade 3 winner on turf and Grade 1-placed on both turf and dirt. One of the stars of Summer Wind’s elite broodmare band – which also includes Triple Crown winner American Pharoah’s dam, Littleprincessemma – Feathered is the dam of three winners from four starters, with Flightline her lone stakes horse to date. Next in the pipeline, the mare has a 3-year-old Curlin colt named Eagles Flight and a 2-year-old Into Mischief filly named Flight of Fancy. After a year off, she delivered another full brother to Flightline in February. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
