Oldzfourfortytwo, sent away as the second-longest shot in the field, pulled off an upset to win Sunday night's $100,000 Mark McDermott Stakes for Pennsylvania-bred 2-year-olds at Presque Isle Downs. Oldzfourfortytwo ($46.20) is now unbeaten in two starts for owner and trainer Tim Girten, having also won his debut Aug. 9 at Presque Isle. Tudox Expectations narrowly led Uncle Archie through opening splits of 22.54 and 45.77 seconds in the McDermott, as Oldzfourfortytwo and Pablo Morales chased them three wide and about a half-length back. Uncle Archie had faded by the time the field cut the corner into the stretch of the six-furlong event, but Tudox Expectations was still fighting on gamely as the eventual winner rallied to him. Oldzfourfortytwo struck the front near the sixteenth pole and edged clear to win by three quarters of a length, stopping the clock in 1:10.49. Afterburner rallied for second. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to his stablemate, favored Kitchen Fire, who edged a stubborn Tudox Expectations for third.
