Ola Docura takes on Ericka's Lass again

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Ola Docura and Ericka's Lass, the one-two finishers in the Canada Stakes here July 1, meet again at Assiniboia in Friday's featured one-mile allowance prep for the Winnipeg Sun Stakes.

The $40,000 Winnipeg Sun, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares, will be run July 31.

In the one-mile Canada Day, Ola Docura rallied to overtake Ericka's Lass in late stretch after Ericka's Lass had made the lead with just under a half-mile to race.

Remiewaterbluz, Pete's Surprise, Strike an Image, and Tamorons Blade also come back from the Canada Day, where Remiewaterbluz fared best of the four as the third-place finisher.

Ocean Effect makes her first start since finishing second, 2 3/4 lengths ahead of Ola Docura, in a second-level allowance race when they last met on June 21.

Rounding out the field is Low Key Affair, who finished sixth, four lengths behind Ericka's Lass, in the six-furlong La Verendrye Stakes last month.

Stormy Business gets second stakes win

Stormy Business ($11.80) overtook heavy favorite Prime Time T.V. in midstretch to win last Sunday's Derby Trial Stakes. Raggidy Rowe was third.

It was the second win in a stakes for Stormy Business and the first local stakes win for trainer Larry Donlin and jockey Felipe Valdez.

Anderson pair run one, two

Last Saturday, Albarino ($3.90) won the restricted Manitoba Maturity, for trainer Carl Anderson and jockey Rohan Singh.

Anderson's other entrant, Simply Regal, finished second with Stonewall Harris third.

It was the first stakes and third overall victory for Albarino, a son of Langfuhr who increased his earnings to $108,858 with the $25,263 winner's share.

Lord Shogun wins Wheat City prep

Last Friday, Lord Shogun ($29.50) won for the first time since his victory in the 2002 Manitoba Derby, capturing an allowance prep for the Aug. 1 Wheat City Stakes. Sand Rush finished second and Northern Affair third.

In the same race, two-time stakes winner Iwoodificould broke down and was humanely destroyed.
