Ola Docura shoots for second stakes

Adam Goss|Jul 29, 2005

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Ola Docura seeks her third consecutive win and second stakes win this year in Sunday's $40,000 Winnipeg Sun Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles at Assiniboia Downs.

Two starts ago, Ola Docura overtook Ericka's Lass late to win the Canada Day, her first stakes victory. In her last start, an allowance prep for the Winnipeg Sun, Ola Docura attended a slow pace before drawing off to win by 3 1/2 lengths.

A 4-year-old daughter of Meadowlake, Ola Docura has won 3 of her 5 starts here this year, with a second and third-place finish in the other two. She will break from post 6 in the field of seven.

Ericka's Lass, who will break from post 5, won her second start of the year in a May 23 allowance prep for the La Verendrye Stakes before taking the six-furlong La Verendrye Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths June 12. She has finished second behind Ola Docura in her two most recent starts.

Last year, Ericka's Lass parlayed a clear lead and reasonable fractions into a front-running score in the Assiniboia Oaks to win her only trip at 1 1/16 miles. She is one of only two horses in the race with a win at the distance of Sunday's race.

Remiewaterbluz finished second behind Ericka's Lass in the La Verendrye before third-place finishes in the both the Canada Day and the allowance prep for this race.

Maui Money, who won last year's Winnipeg Sun at 18-1, takes a huge rise in class after finishing third against $6,250 claimers in her last two starts.

Antartida finished sixth in the Canada Stakes, 3 1/4 lengths behind Ola Docura. She was fourth, 2 1/4 lengths behind third-place finisher Ola Docura, in a second-level allowance race the start before that.

Low Key Affair has failed to hit the board in three starts here this year and was fifth, beaten 5 1/4 lengths, in the allowance prep.

Northlands invader This Crime Pays rounds out the field.
