Oh So Regal sets track record in winning Sunland Park Handicap

Oh So Regal won the $150,000 Sunland Park Handicap by four lengths over stablemate Sphene on Sunday and set a track record for 1 1/8 miles. He covered the distance in 1:47.21 to lower the mark of 1:47.37 that Proceed established on April 12, 2015.
The card also included the $162,905 Copper Top Futurity for New Mexico-breds, won by Hustle Up ($3.40).
Oh So Regal ($14.60) led throughout, setting fractions of 24.07 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.78 for the half-mile, and 1:11.19 for six furlongs. The track was fast. Alfredo Juarez Jr. was aboard for Judge Lanier Racing and Miguel Hernandez.
Futile finished a length behind Sphene in third. He was the favorite.
Oh So Regal is a son of Sidney’s Candy and was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm. He has now won three of nine starts and earned $143,160.
The Sunland meet closes Tuesday.
