Ocean Downs: What That Is, Miss Choptank prevail in Maryland Sire Stakes finals
$67,000 Maryland Sire Stakes finals for 3-year-old male trotters and 3-year-old filly pacers headlined Sunday night's racing program at Ocean Downs.
The sophomore colt and gelding trotters were up first, and the win would go to What That Is (Brian Burton) in 1:57 2/5. What That Is stepped off fractions of 29, 58 3/5, and 1:28, and kept pocket-sitter and favorite Chucky De Vie (Russell Foster) at bay through the lane to win by a neck. Judge Bob (Jonathan Roberts) was third, 11 lengths back of the top two.
Judith Welty trains What That Is, a Cam's Rocket gelding, for owner Brian Emerson. What That Is picked up his ninth career victory, and he has now earned $121,876. He was the 3-1 third choice and paid $8.20 to win.
In the final for 3-year-old pacing fillies, Hs Shauna (Art Stafford Jr.) held command through stations of 27 3/5, 57 1/5, and 1:25 3/5, but first-over challenger Miss Choptank (Allan Davis) wore her down in the lane and went on to win by a length in 1:54 3/5. Princess Rusty (Roberts) was third from the pocket.
Miss Choptank is a Total Truth filly trained by Wayne Givens for owners Legacy Racing Of DE Inc. and Stephen Townsend. She is now a nine-time winner in her life, and she boosted her bankroll to $131,398. The even-money favorite, Miss Choptank returned $4.20 to win.
