Ocean Downs: Maryland Sire Stakes finals decided
Rookie pacing colts and trotting fillies raced in a pair of $67,000 Maryland Sire Stakes finals on Monday at Ocean Downs, with Owzitgoin and Pats A Keeper emerging victorious.
The colt pacers were up first, and Owzitgoin (Corey Callahan) stormed into the lead past the 59 1/5 half, then opened up a three-length advantage at the 1:28 2/5 three-quarters. Owzitgoin continued to pour it on from there, running up the score to win by seven lengths in 1:56 4/5. Sonny's Blessing (Jared Moyer) was second, and Rusty's Houdini (Jason Thompson) finished third.
Shaun Callahan trains the winner, a gelded son of Rusty's For Real, for owner Breakaway Racing. This was Owzitgoin's first win from five starts, and he has now earned $36,861. A 12-1 shot, he paid $27.60 to win.
In the filly trot final Pats A Keeper (Moyer) was at the rear at the 29 2/5 opening quarter, but she improved to sixth at the 1:00 3/5 half, second at the 1:31 1/5 three-quarters, and into first at the wire in a 2:01 1/5 mile. She defeated stablemate Mary's A Keeper (John Wagner) by a half a length, with tempo-setter Gittin All Sexy (Russell Foster) dropping back to third.
The victorious daughter of Lockkeeper is trained by Arlene Cameron for owner/breeder Pamela Wagner. Pats A Keeper has won all three of her attempts, and she has now pocketed $43,550. Racing as part of a 3-5 favored entry, Pats A Keeper returned $3.20 to win.
