Ocean Downs: Freshmen compete in Maryland Sire Stakes finals

Greg Reinhart|Sep 18, 2020

Rookies of both sexes and gaits were in action on Friday night in four $45,000 Maryland Sire Stakes finals at Ocean Downs.

Trents A Lock (Jared Moyer) was overtaken for the top spot by 1-5 favorite Funnyfunnyriddle (Les Givens) just past the 1:03 half in the colt and gelding trot, but he kept the leader in sight, angled out in the lane, and chased down the choice late in the mile to win by half a length in 2:04 2/5 for trainer Arlene Cameron and owner/breeder Pam Wagner. It was the first career win for Trents A Lock, a gelded son of Lockkeeper. He paid $7.60 to win.

In the filly trot, Pride Of Windswept (Montrell Teague) came off the rail from the pocket to follow a first-over Paislees Future (Chris Offutt) on the final bend, then rallied three-wide through the lane to get up and win by a length and a quarter over Paislees Future in a 2:01 1/5 mile. Shaun Callahan trains the winner, a daughter of Charlie De Vie, for owners/breeder John Swart Jr. and Sarah Swart. Pride Of Windswept now has a record of 3-1-0 from four tries and returned $3.40 to win.

Odds-on favorite Stunners Wish (Tony Morgan) made a break in the colt and gelding pace, throwing the race wide-open. 22-1 shot Whep (Kim Vincent) took advantage, angling out of the two-hole on the final bend, surging by leader KO Master (Mark Gray) and pulling away in the lane to win by four lengths in 1:59 2/5. Elwood Tignor bred, owns, and trains the victorious Rusty's For Real gelding, who won for the initial time in his career and paid $47.80 to win.

Wowie Zowie (Russell Foster) delivered at 1-9 in the filly pace, wearing down pace-setter Sjs Special Kay (Jim Moran) in the lane on her way to a four length decision in 1:58 3/5. Megan Foster trains the Russell Foster-owned daughter of Cam's Rocket. Wowie Zowie, who returned $2.10 to win, has four triumphs and a second from five starts.
