Ocean Downs: Analysis for Sunday 8/2 and Monday 8/3

Matt Rose|Aug 01, 2026
Ocean Downs logo

SUNDAY, AUGUST 2 and MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 2026

STATS: 10-38 / $37.60 (-$38.40)

Sunday, August 2

Race 2: $7,500 Claiming Pace

(3) ALEX TYE is a classy vet who gives an honest effort no matter the circumstances. Last week he was forced into a two-move effort from the eight hole and didn’t tire that badly. Tonight he can be hustled from the gate and if he makes the front he may only have (1) NEVER EASY Z TAM to contend with. The latter popped the pocket last start to win easily and draws the rail again. (5) BEST BETTOR gets a driver upgrade to Brandon Givens in his Ocean Downs return and could be worth a look at a double-digit price.

Race 10: Winners over $5,000 in last 4 starts Pace

(3) BABES ALL IN is a perfect 3 for 3 as he’s made his way up the class ranks and 20-year-old driver Shane Griffith has really made an impression during this meet. He faces legit talent from (1) THE LIZARD. (5) T DOG and even (4) ON THE CARDS N but I’ll give him the call.

Monday, August 3

There is a trio of MD Standardbred Fund races on the card, two for 2YO male pacers and one for trotters. Often these races contain a short-priced standout but these three seem reasonably competitive.

Race 1: MDSF 2YO C&G Pace

(4) FINEST HOURS makes his debut for proven connections off two solid-looking half-mile qualifiers. (2) CAPTAIN PAPI debuts for the Callahans and Corey is in to drive. (1) FREE SHOT was a sharp winner on debut then was a sick scratch, and now has almost a month between starts. That is something negative to consider.

Race 3: MDSF 2YO C&G Pace

(7) SHOOTOUT already has two wins to his credit and may offer a touch of value due to the outermost post. (5) CASH IS BETTER won on debut and in a faster time than the top choice, but do handicappers put too much emphasis on final times? (1) NOPARKINGAFTADARK was overmatched last out at Pocono but did finish second to #7 in the Gray Memorial Final.

Race 5: MDSF 2YO C&G Trotters

These young trot races can be an adventure but so far on paper this group seems pretty well-behaved. (1) IN THE WORST WAY and (3) LIL GERALD both come in from their Ohio base for the accomplished Hagerman barn off ‘slowish’ qualifiers, but if they are making the trip perhaps the thought is there’s plenty of room for improvement. (4) MIKE FRANKS is the deserving ML favorite off his runner-up finish last out.
