Ocean Downs: 3-year-olds shine in Monday Maryland Standardbred Fund action

The Maryland Standardbred Fund’s 3-year-old colts and geldings took center stage Monday evening at Ocean Downs, with four divisions contested on the seaside oval. Two pacing divisions and two trotting divisions combined for more than $103,000 in purse money, producing several impressive performances.

With temperatures in the upper 70s and a fast track, the 3-year-olds delivered competitive racing from start to finish.

Better Gon Takes First Pacing Division

Driven by Anthony Morgan and trained by Adrian Wisher Jr., Better Gon settled into fourth early before gradually advancing toward the leaders. By the three-quarter-mile mark, the son of More The Better N–Graygon had moved into third.

Better Gon continued his advance through the stretch and surged late to secure the victory in 1:57, holding off a trio of rivals in a tightly contested finish.

Richie Boy, driven by Corey Callahan and trained by Nicholas Callahan, finished second, while Inca Social, with Roger Plante Jr. in the sulky for trainer Howard Birney, was third.

Booger Bear Dominates the Trotters

The first trotting division produced the most decisive victory of the night as Booger Bear powered away from the field to win by 10 ½ lengths.

Driven by Johnathan Ahle and trained by Richard Hans, Booger Bear established control early from post two and never looked back.

The son of Yall Beneath Me–Get Rich Quick led through every call, reaching the quarter in 29 2/5, the half in 1:00 and three-quarters in 1:29. He then turned in a sharp final quarter of 28 3/5 to stop the clock in 1:57 3/5.

Convicted Criminal, driven by Brandon Givens and trained by Les Givens, finished second, with Worldly Dream and Brady Brown to complete the trifecta.

Booger Bear now has three wins and two seconds in five starts for the season with earnings over $71,000.

Silent Investor Wins Second Pacing Division

Driven by Corey Callahan and trained by Robert W. Clark, Silent Investor sat the pocket behind pace setter-Stained Glass and Russell Foster through fractions of 27 4/5, 58 1/5, and 1:27 3/5.

As they turned for home, Callahan angled Silent Investor to the outside and moved away to a 1 ½ length win in 1:56. Stained Glass (Russell Foster) held second with Beach Buggy (Russell Foster) third.

Silent Investor is owned by Clark Stables LLC of New Jersey and was bred by Frederick Hertrich III of Delaware.

Hattrick Patrick Takes Second Trotting Division

The final Maryland Standardbred Fund division of the night saw Hattrick Patrick establish control early and fend off a determined challenge from the favorite Y’all Got No Shot.

Driven by Brady Brown and trained by Steve Schoeffel, Hattrick Patrick left from post two and immediately moved to the front. The son of Father Patrick–Just For You controlled the pace through fractions of 29 1/5, 1:00 1/5 and 1:30.

Y’all Got No Shot moved forward from the outside and applied pressure during the latter stages, but Hattrick Patrick remained strong through the stretch. He crossed the wire in 1:58 3/5, 1 ½ lengths ahead of Y’all Got No Shot (Russell Foster) and 2 ½ lengths ahead of Thiskissformaryell (Brandon Givens).

Hattrick Patrick is owned by Kathy Schoeffel of Pennsylvania, Lucky Lois Stable of Pennsylvania and Roger Romesser of New York. The gelding was bred by Winbak Farm of Maryland, adding another Maryland-bred connection to the evening’s results.
