Ocean Club wires the field in the Martha Washington
?q=100)
Ocean Club parlayed a lonely lead into a stakes win Saturday, when she led throughout to capture the $75,000 Martha Washington at Gulfstream Park. It was 2 1/4 lengths back in second to Alternate Rock and another length to favorite and third-place finisher Honor D Lady.
The race was the first of two 3-year-old stakes on the card, both on Tapeta.
Ocean Club ($8) moved to the fore soon after the start, and was clear through an opening quarter in 24.81 seconds, a half-mile in 48.77, and six furlongs in 1:12.42. She had more when Alternate Rock and Honor D Lady made their runs at the leader in the stretch, with the winner going on to cover the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.83.
Edwin Gonzalez was aboard Ocean Club for trainer Tom Proctor.
Ocean Club is a daughter of Curlin who races for her breeder, Glen Hill Farm. She turned the tables on Honor D Lady, having finished second to that one in the Honey Ryder one start out from the Martha Washington.
Ocean Club has now won 2 of 6 starts for earnings of $107,600. She is 2 for 2 on Tapeta, as her maiden came on the surface in April at Gulfstream.
