O'Callaghan suspended by track stewards
ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Carl O’Callaghan, who won the $2 million Golden Shaheen in Dubai in 2010 with Kinsale King, was suspended by Santa Anita stewards Sunday for failing to appear at a hearing regarding an unpaid debt.
O’Callaghan owes the backstretch supply company Angel’s Feed $10,962.94, according to a ruling.
Reached by phone, O’Callaghan said by phone that he is working with Christian DeUnamuno, the owner of Angel’s Feed, on a payment plan. Steward Tom Ward said O’Callaghan will not be reinstated until the two parties present documents describing the payment plan and O’Callaghan makes a payment.
O’Callaghan, 39, is based at Canterbury Park this summer. His stable raced at Turf Paradise earlier this year. O’Callaghan has not had a runner in Southern California since April.
** Trainer Bill Spawr has been fined $500 by track stewards after Endless Cruise, the winner of the seventh race May 1, tested in excess of the permitted level of the muscle relaxant Methocarbamol.
The ruling was released Friday.
