OBS Spring: Shakin It Up colt drills fastest quarter

Joe Nevills|Apr 20, 2018

An active day for first-crop sires at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring 2-year-olds in training sale under-tack show was highlighted Friday by a Shakin It Up colt who tied the overall fastest time for a quarter-mile of 20 3/5 seconds.

The horses breezed over the Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Polytrack surface.

Leading the way among the quarter-mile workers was Hip 936, a Shakin It Up colt who is the first foal out of the winning Rockport Harbor mare Savannah Harbor.

Bred in New York by Howard Charles Nolan Jr. and Mary Lu Dolce, the colt is from the family of Grade 1 winner Great Neck, Grade 3 winner Joe Vann, and 2004 Venezuelan broodmare of the year Cloak, whose foals include Venezuelan champions Gran Abuelo, Sibarita, and Demons Cloak.

Hoppel's Horse & Cattle Co. consigns the colt, as agent. He was a $32,000 purchase at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale.

One other horse has clocked in at 20 3/5 seconds for a quarter through the first five days of this year’s under-tack show: Hip 367, an Alpha colt, worked earlier in the week.

Two horses breezed an eighth of a mile in 9 4/5 seconds to lead Friday’s workers.

- Hip 824, a Flatter colt out of the winning Forestry mare Pondside, whose five winners from six runners includes the stakes-placed Wild Penny. His extended family includes Grade 2 winner Avanzare and Grade/Group 3 winners Miss Turkana, Grafin, and Genovefa.

Off the Hook consigns the colt, as agent, and Off The Hook Partners bred the colt in New York.

- Hip 873, a first-crop Mark Valeski colt out of the winning Rubiano mare Reboot, whose 11 foals to race are all winners, including stakes winner Summer Cruise and English Group 1-placed Rebuttal.

Florida-bred and consigned as agent by Woodford Thoroughbreds, the colt hails from the family of Grade 3 winner Sandbar.

The OBS spring under-tack show concludes Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. The auction runs April 24-27, with each session starting at 10:30 a.m.
