OBS Spring: First-crop sires prominent at third breeze show

DRF Breeding Staff|Apr 17, 2014

Offspring from the first crops of champions Lookin At Lucky and Midshipman were among the quartet of juveniles to tie for the fastest furlong time on the third day of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring sale of 2-year-olds in training under-tack show.

A colt by Lookin At Lucky, a filly by Midshipman, a Catienus filly, and a City Zip colt each breezed a furlong in 9 4/5 seconds over the Ocala Training Center’s all-weather Safetrack surface. They are among a total of 11 horses to work in that time through the first three days of the under-tack show.

The Lookin At Lucky colt, consigned by Old South Farm, agent, is out of the Silver Deputy mare Silver Lilly, whose only foal to run is a winner. Silver Lilly is a half-sister to champion Gilded Time; to Grade 3-placed Valid Advantage; and to several productive broodmares, including multiple stakes producers Lill's Cutlass and Gilded Moment.

The Midshipman filly, named Lady Shipman, is consigned by Pleasant Acres Farm, as agent. She is out of the winning Mutakddim mare Sumthingtotalkabt.

Midshipman captured the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and earned the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male; Lookin At Lucky won the same award the following year, despite finishing second in the Juvenile. The latter went on to capture the 2010 Preakness Stakes and earn Eclipse honors as outstanding 3-year-old. The two young sires stand at Darley’s Jonabell Farm near Lexington, Ky., and Coolmore’s Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky., respectively.

The Catienus filly, consigned by Price Thoroughbreds, is out of the Outofthebox mare Sydney's Lexington, a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Victorina. It is the family of Grade 1 winner C. S. Silk.

The City Zip colt is consigned by Silver Star. His dam is the winning Yes It's True mare Yesshesarocket, who is out of a half-sister to three stakes winners and two stakes producers.

A Harlan's Holiday colt turned in the fastest quarter of the breeze show thus far, covering the distance in 20 3/5.

The colt, consigned by Northwest Stud, is out of the unraced Mr Greeley mare Triumphantly, a half-sister to stakes-placed Touch of Splendor.

The session’s fastest three-eighths was clocked by a Yesbyjimminy colt, who went in 33 1/5. The colt, consigned by Blue River Bloodstock, as agent, is out of the Wild Event mare Wild Libby, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Winter Melody.

The OBS spring under-tack show will conclude Friday, with the session beginning at 8 a.m. Eastern. The sale will be held April 21-24, with daily sessions starting at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
