Oaklawn Park: Brewing captures Gazebo in first try against winners

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Brewing became a stakes winner at Oaklawn Park on Saturday, when he backed up an impressive maiden score with a three-length win over Big Sugar Soda in the $100,000 Gazebo for 3-year-olds. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third to Condo Closing.
Condo Closing’s rider, Alex Canchari, was thrown past the wire and taken off the track on a backboard. He was tended to by ontrack medical staff, and was conscious, stood up, and moved his arms and legs, according to Oaklawn spokesperson Jennifer Hoyt. He was transported to a local hospital for observation, said Hoyt.
Brewing ($8.80) moved to the lead soon after the start of the Gazebo, and proceeded to take the field through fractions of 21.95 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.66 for the half-mile. He had more in the stretch, and on a sealed track rated wet-fast covered six furlongs in 1:10.45.
“He just broke sharp, made the lead, took command from there,” said Jon Court, who rode the winner for Zayat Stables and trainer Wayne Lukas.
Lukas said Brewing, who is not nominated to the Triple Crown, seems to be a horse who will be at his best at distances up to a mile. The $100,000 Bachelor, a six-furlong race for 3-year-olds at Oaklawn on April 11, is a target for Brewing, the trainer said following the Gazebo.
Brewing is a son of the Vindication stallion Maimonides and was bred in Florida by Zayat Stables. He has now won 2 of 6 starts and $94,931.
