Notapradaprice pulls surprise in Dr. James Penney Memorial

Barbara Weidl /EQUI-PHOTO Notapradaprice and jockey Frankie Pennington keep 2-5 favorite Fifty Five at bay to win the Dr. James Penny Memorial at Parx on Tuesday.

Fifty Five came into the Grade 3, $202,000 Dr. James Penny Memorial at Parx on Tuesday riding a four-race winning streak, all stakes. Notapradaprice had finally cleared her second allowance condition in her ninth try.

Accordingly, Fifty Five was sent off at 2-5 in the 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares, with Notapradaprice at 25-1

But what looked to be a mismatch on paper turned into a battle and then an upset, with Notapradaprice and jockey Frankie Pennington holding off Fifty Five by a half-length.

Notapradaprice stalked the early pace in the Penny Memorial and got the jump on Fifty Five turning into the stretch. Fifty Five, under Javier Castellano, was floated wide coming off the far turn, and though she was wearing down Notapradaprice in the final furlong, she was not able to get by. More Fun Again finished third in the field of six.

Notapradaprice, a 5-year-old mare by Paddy O’Prado, is owned by Main Line Racing Stables and trained by John Servis. She paid $52 to win and covered the 1 1/16 miles over a firm course in 1:45.19.
