Notable Speech unleashed a furious rally in the final furlong to win Saturday’s Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury Racecourse in Britain, his first victory since the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Del Mar last November. Notable Speech, who won the Eclipse Award as the outstanding turf male of 2025 in the United States, beat a strong field in the $535,800 Lockinge Stakes at a mile, pulling clear under jockey William Buick to prevail by two lengths. Notable Speech paid $5.30 as the favorite in American pools. More Thunder (7-1) finished second, three-quarters of a length in front of 4-1 Zeus Olympios, who was beaten for only the second time in his sixth start. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! The Lockinge Stakes was the fifth Group 1 or Grade 1 win for Notable Speech, a 5-year-old horse by Dubawi who is owned by Godolphin Racing and trained by Charlie Appleby. Aside from the BC Mile, Notable Speech won the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile last September. As a 3-year-old in 2024, he won two Group 1 races in Britain – the English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Notable Speech finished a troubled fourth in his first start this year, the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland on April 10. In the Lockinge, run on a straight course, Notable Speech was ridden by William Buick. In the first half of the race, Notable Speech was rated in sixth in a field of 10, stalking pacesetter Mississippi River. Buick moved Notable Speech closer to the front with a quarter-mile remaining, and found ample racing room with more than a furlong remaining. “We wanted the horse to show what he has got and today you saw the real Notable Speech,” Appleby said. “I said to Will that he was moving around a bit, but he said the pace was collapsing all around him. We know you have to hold on to that acceleration for as long as you can because the horse has some turn of foot.  “They went an even gallop, nothing mad, and I was happy with that because there are not many horses who can quicken like he can. I thought that, if it was going to turn into a burn up over the last couple of furlongs, Will is on the right horse to do so.” Three of the runners beaten in the Lockinge were behind Notable Speech in the BC Mile. The Lion in Winter, Sahlan, and Jonquil – who were third, fifth, and ninth in the BC Mile – finished fifth, eighth and ninth in the Lockinge Stakes. Notable Speech has won 8 of 16 starts. He is expected to have his next start in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at a mile at Royal Ascot on June 16. Notable Speech was 4-1 with British bookmakers on Thursday for the Lockinge, and was the subject of strong support through Saturday. Damysus, who had won his three previous starts, was the 5-2 favorite on Thursday, and went off at 7-2. Damysus finished sixth, beaten 6 1/4 lengths. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
