ETOBICOKE, Ontario – When Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby come to Woodbine, it’s time to sit up and take notice. They are a combined 9 for 17 in Grade 1 company here and will have a runner in all three Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In qualifiers on Saturday, including the accomplished Notable Speech in the Grade 1, $1 million Woodbine Mile. In the afternoon’s other Grade 1s, both for 2-year-olds, Godolphin and Appleby bring in Wild Desert for the Summer Stakes and Dance To The Music for the Natalma. Notable Speech captured two Group 1s last year in England, most notably the English 2000 Guineas. He capped his 2024 campaign with a third as the favorite in the Nov. 2 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Del Mar. Notable Speech is winless in four starts this year, all in Group 1 company in Europe. The son of Dubawi was probably best when a late-charging second after getting stuck in traffic in the Aug. 17 Prix Jacques Le Marois, a straight mile race at Deauville. “We were delighted with his run there and it was good to see he still retains his enthusiasm for racing,” Appleby said. “I think this horse always puts his best foot forward but needs things to fall right for him on the day.” William Buick has the mount on Notable Speech. He rode Godolphin’s two previous Woodbine Mile winners, Master of The Seas (2023) and Modern Games (2022). Both went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. The Woodbine Mile lured eight others for its first running around two turns on the inner turf. Win for the Money, trained by Mark Casse, will try to win the race for the second year in a row under Patrick Husbands. Casse has won the Mile three times. Win for the Money appears to be cycling up to a peak performance after finishing third in the Grade 1 Fourstardave at Saratoga in his second start off a layoff. Husbands was aboard when the 6-year-old breezed five-eighths in 1:02.20 on the Tapeta while well in hand here Sept. 3. Casse also entered My Boy Prince, who has evolved into a productive sprinter-miler after he was gelded during the offseason. He set the pace last out in the one-mile Fourstardave before fading to fourth. That race followed a narrow loss to reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Patches O’Houlihan in the Grade 2 Highlander. Joel Rosario will ride Canada’s 2023 champion male 2-year-old and 2024 King’s Plate runner-up. “I think he is really going to like the inner turf,” Casse predicted. “He’s very good on sharp turns.” Gas Me Up rallied wide from far back to take the local prep for the Woodbine Mile, the Grade 2 King Edward. The Kevin Attard-trained gelding is unbeaten in three starts over Woodbine’s main turf, which is currently being refurbished. His lone local loss was a flat fifth in allowance company on the inner course June 1. Flavien Prat has the mount. “Ideally, it would be nicer to see the race on the [main] turf, with his record,” Attard said. “When looking back at his race on the inner, he was coming off a long layoff, going a mile around two turns. Maybe he wasn’t cranked up enough. I’m hoping that race was a little better than it looks. He’s obviously going to have to step up. He’s trained well in the interim.” Stanley House has earned career-best 96 Beyer Speed Figures in his last two outings, a closing second in the Grade 3 Dominion Day on Tapeta and a front-running score most recently in the 1 1/4-mile Niagara Stakes on the main turf Aug. 2. To keep him from lugging out, trainer Mike DePaulo believes a new bit has been the key to turning the 5-year-old’s form around. “It’s like an extended burr,” DePaulo said. “He wore it in his last two starts, with pretty good results.” South African invader One Stripe is making his first start for trainer Graham Motion off a layoff. He won South Africa’s version of the King’s Plate in January, which was his second consecutive Group 1 triumph in that country. One Stripe will be ridden by John Velazquez. The Hall of Famer has had incredible success here over the years, including a record five Woodbine Mile triumphs, on Riviera (2000), Leroidesanimaux (2005), Wise Dan (2012-2013), and World Approval (2017). :: Get Daily Racing Form Past Performances – the exclusive home of Beyer Speed Figures Frankie Dettori will ride stretch-running Wyoming Bill, who will have blinkers added. Trained by Catherine Day Phillips, he won an allowance three starts back on the inner course and is coming off a second in the one-mile King Edward. The speedy Hunt Master is ambitiously spotted off a nose loss and a $50,000 claim by Bruno Schickedanz, North America’s leading owner in wins this year. Hunt Master is cross-entered in Saturday’s Grade 3 Vigil Stakes here. Maryland-based Naptown is coming off a first-level allowance score at Colonial Downs. Post time for Saturday’s 12-race card is 1:05 p.m. Eastern. The Woodbine Mile goes as the ninth at 5:39 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
