Not all Ontario-based sires are equal

Ron Gierkink|Aug 13, 2003

2-year-old winners. The following is a guide to how the leading Ontario sires fare with their juveniles.

Alydeed: His first Ontario-sired crop debuted this year, and it includes a stakes-placed winner. Alydeed won the Victoria Stakes in his lone juvenile start, and has produced Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Primaly, but many of his offspring matured at 3 and 4, such as Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks winner Hedonist, and stakes winners Torrid Affair and A La Reine. An average first-out sire, Alydeed should become a dominant force in the Ontario-sired ranks in the years to come, although his offspring might not be very precocious.

Ascot Knight: His offspring prefer grass and longer distances. They rarely win at first crack, and are generally late bloomers, such as champion older female Pennyhill Park and Grade 2 Molly Pitcher Handicap winner Hey Hazel.

Bold Executive: He was an early blooming 2-year-old, and has passed that trait on to many of his offspring, such as stakes winners Streakin Rob, Cocney Lass, and Bold Mist. His progeny win at a high 19 percent clip first time out, and are often loaded with speed. Many of them succeed in grass sprints.

Bold n' Flashy: Like Bold Executive, he is a son of Bold Ruckus, and although he showed speed on the track, he made his mark from 3 to 6 on turf, where some of his offspring excel. He has produced juvenile stakes winners Crumpet and Miss Crissy, along with a host of stakes performers who peaked from 3 to 4. His progeny win at an above-average rate first time out.

Compadre: A long-winded turf specialist, he has sired a surprisingly high percentage of debut winners, and recently had his first stakes winner, 2-year-old La Grande Mamma. His offspring are capable of running short or long, on dirt and turf.

Dr. Adagio: He sired a pair of juvenile stakes winners in 1998, but hasn't come close to duplicating that feat in his last few crops. He gets mainly sprinters, and his first-out percentage is below average.

Highland Ruckus: A full brother to Bold Executive, he won 5 of 7 starts at 2, including four stakes races. He has sired numerous early developers, including juvenile champion Highland Legacy, and other stakes winners Ruby Shoes, Highland Vixen, and C D Ruckus. He has a high mark with first-out winners.

Kiridashi: Another son of Bold Ruckus, he was stakes placed at 2 and then made a name for himself over middle distances on dirt and turf from 3 to 6. He was the leading freshman sire in Canada last year, although he didn't have much competition in that category. He has sired a pair of juvenile stakes winners - Stormthebarricade and Snake Pit.

Tejabo: He has sired late-maturing stakes winners T J's Lucky Moon, Except for Wanda, and Nothing Special. A son of Deputy Minister, he had two juvenile stakes winners in 2002 - Santerra and Timeform - who have both petered out this year. He has a low mark with first-timers, and his offspring generally do better with racing experience.

Tethra: A rapid multiple stakes winner at 2 and 3, he has evolved into a surprisingly versatile sire. Among his progeny are 2-year-old stakes winners Mighty Quinn, Biddy's Lad, and Parisia. He is slightly above average with first-start winners.

War Deputy: He was last year's leading sire in Canada by earnings, and his progeny tend to develop at 3 and beyond, such as stakes winners Forever Grand and Spanish Decree. He has a low mark with first-timers and the average win distance of his offspring is just under seven furlongs.

Whiskey Wisdom: Runners from his first crop are 4-year-olds, and he has sired several 2-year-old stakes performers. He had a 2-year-old debut winner last Saturday, but he has a below-average mark with first-timers. His offspring are likely to blossom when they get older, as he did.

The following is a list of Woodbine's leading 2-year-old trainers in terms of win percentage, with at least 25 starters since the beginning of 2002.
