Northlands Park: So Good Lucky on the upswing

Randy Goulding|Aug 17, 2011

So Good Lucky took 11 starts before he won for the first time, but it looks like he has an excellent chance of doubling his win total when he runs in a first-level allowance race at Northlands Park Friday. The six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up drew eight horses and goes as race 7 on the eight -race card which begins at 7 p.m. Mountain.

Trained by Joan Petrowski, So Good Lucky has improved with racing and he may not have reached his peak. After going all out to win a maiden special weight race over Treasured Kitten July 27 he came back with a solid second-place finish behind heavily favored Dollarwaitnonadime in a $32,000 optional race Aug. 7. Dollarwaitonadime was coming off of two solid efforts while facing the best 3-year-olds at Northlands, finishing third going six furlongs in the $50,000 Western Handicap June 18, and then fourth in the one-mile Ky Alta July 9.

Adding to So Good Lucky’s appeal is his versatility. He dueled on the lead the whole way in his game win and he came from well back in his latest race. There appears to be plenty of potential speed in the field, and leading rider Rico Walcott will likely ease him into a stalking position leaving from post 2.

The filly Surfin’ Sydney will tackle males after an impressive debut in a maiden special weight race for trainer Cody Anderson July 10. With Walcott aboard, she dueled through honest fractions before drawing off to score by 2 1/2 lengths over Squiggly Gets Even, who finished over 12 lengths clear of the third-place finisher. The race was elevated when Squiggly Gets Even came back to win her next start in a $22,000 maiden-claiming race.

Tony Maragh picks up the mount.

Vicar’s Ice Pick won’t mind what figures to be a hotly contested pace. Trained by Craig Smith, Vicar’s Ice Pick came from well back to beat So Good Lucky in a maiden special weight race June 10. He ran evenly while finishing third in a first-level allowance race in his most recent start July 31.
