Northfield Park: Track record performance by Baron Remy in Courageous Lady
Ohio Sires Stakes champion Baron Remy took on open company in tonight's $125,000 Courageous Lady for 3-year-old pacing fillies at Northfield Park, and she came away with another victory, halting the clock in a track record 1:51 3/5.
Driven by Chris Page, Baron Remy made front from post three and reached the opening quarter in 27 2/5 and the half in 56 4/5. Race favorite Wisdom Tree (Matt Kakaley), who had gotten away fourth from post six, was out and on the move at the half, and she would get side-by-side with Baron Remy at the 1:24 1/5 three-quarters.
Baron Remy managed to continue to fend off Wisdom Tree's try around the far turn and into the lane, then kept pocket-sitter and passing-lane attacker Cult Icon (Dave Palone) at bay by a length on the line. Wisdom Tree ended up third.
"It says something for the Ohio-breds actually," remarked Page. "She's a Yankee Cruiser, stepped up in Grand Circuit company and got the job done. I've had the luxury of driving this filly all year long in the sire stakes, and she's a sweetheart."
Ron Burke trains Baron Remy, a daughter of Yankee Cruiser, for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC., Silva Purnel And Libby, Larry Karr, and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. This was her eighth career win, and she has now earned $465,010. She paid $4.00 to win as the even-money second choice.
Eight $60,000 Ohio Sires Stakes consolations were also raced on the card, and they were dominated by drivers Aaron Merriman and Ronnie Wrenn Jr., with Merriman tripling and Wrenn Jr. doubling.
Merriman won the 2-year-old filly trot with Bella's Rose Power (Triumphant Caviar) in 1:57 2/5 for co-owner/trainer Chris Beaver and his partners James Gallagher, Marion Beachy, and Steven Zeehandelar, the 3-year-old filly trot with Infrontandforgetit (Dontyouforgetit) in 1:58 for trainer Jim Arledge Jr. and owners Greg Buckey, William Buckey, Mary McLoughlin, and Spring Mill Venture, and the 2-year-old male pace with Yankee Boots (Yankee Cruiser) in 1:53 2/5 for co-owner/trainer Steve Carter and partners Peggy Carter, Chuck Grubbs, and Joseph Whitacre.
As for Wrenn Jr., he clicked with Mike Roth-trained and Patty Roth and Alan Keith-owned Bad Sammie (Big Bad John) in 1:55 3/5 in the 2-year-old filly pace and was back to win the 3-year-old colt and gelding pace with Dragonology (Dragon Again) in 1:53 1/5. Dragonolgy is trained by Burke for owners Country Club Acres Inc., Joe Sbrocco, and Aws Stbs LLC.
