Northfield: Page, Burke clean up in Ohio Sires Stakes

webmaster|Jul 02, 2022

Stablemates Sea Silk and Cape Cod Hanover swept the two $55,000 divisions of the Ohio Sires Stakes 3-year-old filly pace at MGM Northfield Park Saturday evening.

In the first split, Sea Silk made it look easy, winning in 1:50 4/5. Dragons Revenge, with Aaron Merriman, raced to the lead off the gate but was quickly reeled in by Sea Silk and Chris Page, who grabbed the lead at the quarter-pole in 26 4/5. The daughter of Downbytheseaside covered the half in 54 4/5 and hit the three-quarter mark in 1:23 3/5.

Cold Hearted Gypsy and Chris Lems challenged Sea Silk entering the final turn, but as they entered the stretch, Sea Silk opened her lead and cruised to a 2 3/4 length victory. Cold Hearted Gypsy finished second, with Dragons Revenge third.

The 1-9 favorite is trained by Ron Burke and owned by the Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi, Knox Services, and Hatfield Stable. The victory was Sea Silk's third of the year and 12th in 16 lifetime starts. With the win Sea Silk has now earned $88,864 this year and pushed her lifetime earnings to $672,956.

In the second flight, Cape Cod Hanover finally found the winner's circle this year in Ohio Sires Stakes action, giving Page and Burke the sweep of the third leg for sophomore pacing fillies. Cape Cod Hanover was second in the first two legs.

Greg Grismore took Prancing Queen to early lead, covering the first quarter in 26 3/5. The lead did not last long as 6-5 favorite Do It Like Bobbi and Tony Hall grabbed the lead at the half in 54 seconds. As the field headed down the backstretch, Page pulled Cape Cod Hanover first-over and took the lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:22 1/5.

Cape Cod Hanover and Do It Like Bobbi battled around the final turn, with Do It Like Bobbi retaking the lead briefly, only to see Cape Cod Hanover forge her way back in front and hold on to win by three-quarters of a length in a new lifetime mark of 1:51 2/5. Do It Like Bobbi held on for second, with Prancing Queen finishing second.
