Northfield: Ohio Sires Stakes won by Tom Largo, Rose Run Boom

Tom Largo and Rose Run Boom grabbed top honors from two $75,000 Ohio Sires Stakes splits for sophomore trotting colts and geldings on Monday evening at Northfield Park.

Starting from post one in the opening division, Tom Largo (Chris Lems) won by 5 1/4 lengths in 1:54 4/5 after he led through fractions of 28 2/5, 58 2/5 and 1:26 3/5. Bitcoin King (Aaron Merriman) finished second, followed by Special Moni (Dan Noble).

A Long Tom gelding bred by Midland Acres Inc., Tom Largo is trained by Scott Cox for owners Jughead Stables LLC., G Peters and Robert Kubiak. Tom Largo has won 11 of his 20 career starts, has earned $350,250 and paid $2.10 to win.

In the other section Rose Run Boom (Luke Hanners) stepped to the front from the pole position but faced outside pressure from a parked Where Theres Smoke (Sam Widger) to the 27 3/5 quarter and 56 1/5 half. Rose Run Boom remained in command to three-quarters in 1:25 3/5, but faced a new outside challenger as Deer In Range (Kurt Sugg) went three-wide from second-over and went at it with Rose Run Boom on the final bend.

Rose Run Boom managed to put away Deer In Range turning for home, but wasn't out of the woods as 3-5 favorite Grape Crush (Noble) had space in the passing lane from the pocket in the stretch. Rose Run Boom wouldn't waver, though, fending off Grape Crush as well to win by half a length in 1:56. Water Slide (Merriman) checked in third.

The victorious gelding by In Range was sent out by Steve Carter for owners Jeff Fought Racing, Brian Carsey, Adam Friedland and Jacob Beard. The Rose Run Farm-bred has a summary of 5-2-4 from 20 efforts, has pocketed $185,581 and returned $5 to win.
