Northfield: Mocha Hill stays perfect with Ohio Sires Stakes victory
Mocha Hill was the lone favorite to win, posted the fastest time, and improved her career record to three-for-three with a 1:58 1/5 triumph in a $50,000 Ohio Sires Stakes split for 2-year-old filly trotters on Wednesday evening at MGM Northfield Park. Dream Something and Chrome Trim won the other divisions.
With Chris Page in the bike, Mocha Hill went first-over out of third coming to three-quarters and advanced on the rim to get side-by-side with leader Sienna Sunrise (Luke Hanners) on the last turn. Mocha Hill would sustain her brush into the lane to take command, and she would then pull away to win by 3 1/4 lengths. Sienna Surprise, who cut fractions of 28 4/5, 1:00 and 1:28 4/5, held off Aunt Lilly (Anthony MacDonald) for second.
Ron Burke trains Mocha Hill, a daughter of What The Hill bred by Franklin Equine LLC., for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC., Hatfield Stables, Weaver Bruscemi LLC. and Knox Services Inc. She has earned $55,000 and paid $2.80 to win after going off at odds of 2-5.
Back in the opening flight, Freedom Hill (MacDonald) was the leader at the 29 1/5 quarter and 1:00 3/5 half, but Rose Run Allison (Page) forged her way into the lead on the outside from first-over approaching the 1:29 three-quarters. Freedom Hill managed to keep Rose Run Allison two-wide through the last turn, but Rose Run Allison put her away in the stretch and looked to head for the finish line.

Dream Something (Chris Lems) had other ideas, though, as Lems fanned her out three-wide from the pocket for the drive, and she surged by Rose Run Allison at the wire, prevailing by a neck in 1:58 3/5. Rose Run Allison, who was sent off at 1-5, had to settle for second and Freedom Hill ended up third.
Trainer Miles Wollam also co-owns Dream Something, an Uncle Peter filly bred by Johanna Beaver, Michael Carter and Mary McLoughlin, with partners Julie Ann and Dale Sweet. Dream Something has two wins in three outings, has pocketed $36,369 and returned $37.20 to win as a 17-1 offering.
The final section saw 1-5 favorite Brink Street (Page) take the top spot past the 29 2/5 opening quarter and then back down the half to 1:00 4/5. Brink Street kept the tempo easy to the 1:31 1/5 three-quarters, but Move Over Boys (Aaron Merriman) came with a big first-over move out of third that carried her by Brink Street on the last turn. Much like in the event won by Dream Something, Move Over Boys led but couldn't get back to the cones on the final bend, which gave Chrome Trim (Elliott Deaton) a chance to swing to her outside from the two-hole in the stretch.
Move Over Boys was game as she finally dispatched Brink Street in the lane and tried to seal the deal, but Chrome Trim had the fresh legs and was able to out-finish Move Over Boys to the wire, winning by three-quarters of a length in 2:00 1/5. Move Over Boys was a good second at 19-1 and Brink Street faded to third.
By Long Tom, Chrome Trim was bred by Stephen Miller and is owned by trainer Isaiah Shrake with Terrie Shrake. Chrome Trim broke her maiden in her third chance, has put away $38,532 and paid $19.00 as an 8-1 shot.
