Northfield: Lt Loverboy posts quickest mile in Monday's Ohio Sires Stakes
$200,000 was on the line in four $50,000 Ohio Sires Stakes flights for 2-year-old colt and gelding trotters on Monday night at MGM Northfield Park.
Lt Loverboy, a Long Tom gelding bred by Midland Acres, won for the second time in three outings in his division and took the fastest clocking of 1:58 3/5. Lt Loverboy, driven by Kurt Sugg, took the lead past the 29 3/5 quarter and maintained the top spot to the half in 59 4/5 and the three-quarters in 1:29 1/5. Lt Loverboy then took advantage of breaks by Hilltop Sonar (Brett Miller), who was making a menacing bid from second-over in the backstretch, and Scrappys Love (Aaron Merriman), who was in the pocket, to open up and win by 2 1/2 lengths over Rose Run Alex (Chris Page).
Daren Harvey trains the winner for owners Wayne Mast Jr. and Callam Racing LLC. He paid $3.60 to win.
Merriman teamed with trainer Chris Beaver to win the opening and closing splits with Uncle Moneybags and Caviar Creek. Uncle Moneybags led all the way from the pole position and tallied by a length in 1:59 3/5, while Caviar Creek rallied in the passing lane from the pocket and scored in 1:58 4/5.

Both Uncle Moneybags and Caviar Creek broke their maidens. Uncle Moneybags, by Uncle Peter and bred by Spurwood Farm, is owned by Beaver in partnership with Barry Carter, VIP Internet Stable and Tim Homan, while Beaver shares ownership of Caviar Creek, a Triumphant Caviar gelding bred by John Hochstetler, with Steve Zeehandelar, Leo Fleming and Mark Schwartz.
Quintuplet, a 14-1 shot, posted the biggest surprise in the sires stakes as he put up panels of 29, 59 1/5 and 1:28 3/5 on his way to a four length victory in 1:59 1/5 for driver Ronnie Wrenn Jr., trainer Rosy Weaver and owners Mark Martin and Patricia Jury. Quintuplet, a gelded son of What The Hill, was bred by Jonas Schlabach and is now two-for-two in his brief career.
