Northfield: Essig looking for first Milstein win with Buzzsaw Russ

Dean Gillette Buzzsaw Russ starts from post two in Saturday's Milstein Memorial.

An Indiana Sires Stakes champion at two, Buzzsaw Russ will try to continue his recent success with a victory in Saturday's (August 12) $300,000 Carl Milstein Memorial at MGM Northfield Park.

Buzzsaw Russ looks to extend his win streak to three on Saturday, following two decisive victories against Indiana Sires Stakes company. The trip to the "Flying Turns" marks not only the first time he will ship but the first time he will race over a half-mile track, something his connections don't think will be an issue.

"We train over a half-mile track, and he gets over it just fine; I'm expecting no issues," said Joe Essig, husband of trainer Melissa Essig.

The talented son of Rockin Image was purchased by owners Russell Beeman and Charles Weaver for just $52,000 at the Hoosier Classic Sale.

"He has been a nice colt all along and showed tons of speed while training down," said Essig.

After winning two of his first three starts, Russ got roughed up two starts in a row, so his connections decided to try Lasix. He got better with every start, and in the Indiana Super Final closed bravely from off the pace to win in 1:50 2/5, a significant victory for the Essigs and his family.

"When he went on Lasix, he improved; he is such a determined racehorse," Essig said. "It was a wonderful feeling when he won the final; he is co-owned by my father-in-law and a good friend of the family, so that made it more special."

Buzzsaw Russ had a slow start to his sophomore campaign, but the trips didn't seem to work out in those efforts. "He's come back strong; there were a few starts where he had some brutal trips; luck has been on our side lately."

Essig, who won the 1995 Battle of Lake Erie with Lusty Leader as a driver, would love to "return home" and garner another stakes victory. "Northfield has been very good to us over the years; it would be amazing to win the Milstein."

The card also features three guaranteed wagers, a $30,000 added Pick-4 beginning in Race 8, a $10,000 gtd. late Pick-4 beginning in Race 12, and a $10,000 gtd. Super High Five in Race 13. All three wagers feature a low 14% takeout.

Lady Luck's Dining Room will also be open with a dinner special available for $32; Summerfest Grille and Crooked Kettle Popcorn will also be on site for guests from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. To make reservations on Saturday, call 330-467-4101.

Post time on Saturday night is 6:00 p.m.
