Northfield: Beaver sweeps Ohio Sires Stakes trotting tests
The featured races on Saturday night at Northfield Park were two $50,000 Ohio Sires Stakes races for 3-year-old male trotters, and trainer Chris Beaver won both of them, prevailing with Never Say Uncle and Otsego.
Never Say Uncle (Brett Miller) worked out a second-over trip from the trailing post nine and rallied in the lane to take the opening flight by 4 1/2 lengths in 1:56 1/5 over the sloppy going. Dylan The Great (Kurt Sugg) followed the winner from third-over and was the runner-up, with leader Voyage To Paris third.
Chris Beaver also shares ownership of Never Say Uncle, an Uncle Peter gelding, with breeders Johanna Beaver, Michael Carter, and Mary McLoughlin. This was Never Say Uncle's third career win, and he has now earned $95,610. A 5-2 shot, he paid $7.40 to win.
In the other division Otsego (Aaron Merriman) was pocketed behind Yes (Ryan Stahl) through fractions of 29, 59, and 1:27 1/5, and used a 28 1/5 final quarter to get up and defeat the pace-setter by a neck in 1:55 3/5. Wittyville (Chris Page) was tthe third-place finisher.
Otsego, a gelded son of Dejarmbro, is owned by Beaver, Martin Yoder, Steven Zeehandelar, and VIP Internet Stable LLC. Otsego is now a three-time winner in his life, and he has put away $58,918. Dispatched at 10-1, he returned $23.40 to win.
