OZONE PARK, N.Y. – North Dakota, winner of Saturday’s Grade 3 Red Smith Stakes at Aqueduct, was one of seven horses trainer Shug McGaughey on Sunday shipped from New York to Florida, where they will get time off or be pointed to races early in the Gulfstream Park meet. McGaughey hasn’t exactly decided in which category falls North Dakota. McGaughey does know he wants to keep North Dakota running at marathon distances, though the two-mile H. Allen Jerkens at Gulfstream on Dec. 26 isn’t what he has in mind. :: Start earning weekly cashback on your wagering today. Click to learn more. Shortly after the 1 3/8-mile Red Smith, McGaughey did receive a text from Mike Lakow, vice president of racing operations at Gulfstream Park, to extend an invitation to the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational on Jan. 23. That race is at 1 3/16 miles. “That could be a possibility,” McGaughey said. “It’s something to point for a little bit.” North Dakota received a 100 Beyer Speed Figure for his Red Smith victory, in which he rallied from off the pace to beat Red Knight by a half-length. It was his second straight strong effort since being stretched out in distance. He finished a troubled fourth going 1 1/2 miles in the Grade 3 Sycamore at Keeneland on Oct. 15. “I always felt like that’s what he wanted to do,” McGaughey said. Before McGaughey sends his stable to Florida for the winter, he will have a number of horses to run in the 17 stakes the New York Racing Association offers at Aqueduct from Friday through Dec. 6. Friday, McGaughey will send out Mrs. Danvers in a field of 10 3-year-old fillies set to run 1 1/8 miles in the Grade 3, $100,000 Comely Stakes. Mrs. Danvers is coming off a first-level allowance win going a one-turn mile at Belmont on Oct. 25. McGaughey is looking forward to trying her in the Comely around two turns and at 1 1/8 miles, both for the first time. Mrs. Danvers is a daughter of Tapit and her second dam is Starry Dreamer, the mother of North Dakota as well as two-turn graded stakes winner Teammate. “She had a really good work this morning for a horse that wants to run a mile and an eighth,” McGaughey said Sunday, referring to a half-mile move in 50 seconds over the Belmont main track. “I would hope she would break good and maybe be on the lead or be stalking a little bit.” :: Want to get your Past Performances for free? The only graded stakes winners in the Comely are Miss Marissa, winner of the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan, and Project Whiskey, winner of the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks at 38-1 in July. The remainder of the field consists of New York-bred stakes winners Makingcents and Ice Princess, Toned Up, My Sweet Wife, Thankful, Gale, and Pure Rhythm. This coming weekend, McGaughey plans to run Scarlett Sky in the Central Park and Hungry Kitten in the Long Island on Saturday, and Island Treasure in the Tepin on Sunday. On Dec. 5, McGaughey will run probable race favorite Performer in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile.
