No Show Sammy Jo will be firmly in her comfort zone when she returns from a short break in the Grade 3 Sheepshead Bay Stakes on Friday at Aqueduct. A two-time stakes winner for Graham Motion last year, the mare earned her brief respite and should ship to New York with a strong winning chance at 1 3/8 miles on the inner turf course. “I thought I ran her plenty down in Florida and I wanted to freshen her up a little bit,” Motion said. “So this race kind of fell into that schedule, and I think she’s shown this is the distance that she wants to go.” When No Show Sammy Jo ran second in the Grade 3 Long Island at Aqueduct in November, she gave Motion every indication that she was prepared to run through the winter at Gulfstream Park. She won the $125,000 Via Borghese next time out and nearly won the Grade 3 The Very One in February, getting outkicked by a half-length. “I think [jockey Jorge Ruiz] maybe thought he might have moved a little too soon there,” Motion said. “I think with the smaller field, it will be interesting to see how it sets up, but she’s pretty adaptable.” :: DRF Kentucky Derby Package: Save on Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Dona Clota, a Chilean-bred who has run for three trainers since arriving in the U.S. last year, is cross-entered in the Grade 3 Modesty at Churchill Downs on Friday for Saffie Joseph Jr. Trainer Miguel Clement has two runners entered in the main field of six older fillies and mares. Unreasonable will run in her first stakes since moving to the United States last year, while Kiamba will make her first North American start off a seven-month layoff. In eight starts overseas for trainer Joseph O’Brien, Unreasonable finished in the money in two stakes but failed to score again after a debut victory at Cork in September 2023. The Irish-bred made one start for Christophe Clement and has since run three times for Miguel. In July, she finally earned her second career victory in a first-level allowance at Saratoga, stretching out to 1 3/16 miles and earning an 85 Beyer Speed Figure. She has not raced since August, when she finished a distant second in a 1 5/16-mile allowance at Kentucky Downs. Clement credited Unreasonable’s owner, Newtown Anner Stud Farm, for making the bold decision to run her for another year. “Ambitious entry, but she has been training rather forwardly at Payson Park,” Clement said. “She’ll be forwardly placed, catch-me-if-you-can style. She will be on the lead. I think it’s amusing to go forward in this race. In her works, she’s becoming braver and braver.” Kiamba has spent her entire career in France and most recently finished second in the Group 3 Prix Belle de Nuit at Saint-Cloud, a 1 3/4-mile turf marathon last October. Clement said he was hoping for soft turf at Aqueduct, which could help her acclimate. “She’s only had six works in America, so she’s a little undercooked,” Clement said. “But good horses can bail you out and it’s nice to get your first start under your belt in a graded stakes and a six-horse field.” Storm Miami and Lady Firefoot complete the field, along with main-track-only runner Bernietakescharge. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
