No decision yet on running Mighty Heart in Prince of Wales Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Josie Carroll said a decision has yet to be made regarding whether Larry Cordes’ blowout Queen’s Plate winner Mighty Heart will run back in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on the dirt at Fort Erie on Sept. 29.
Mighty Heart rode a speed bias to a 7 1/2-length score under Daisuke Fukumoto in the Sept. 12 Queen’s Plate. His 1 1/4-mile time of 2:01.98 was the fastest Plate in the synthetic era at Woodbine, and the one-eyed homebred earned a big 99 Beyer Speed Figure.
“He came out of the race extremely well,” Carroll said.” It was really special for Larry and his family.”
Carroll said the anchor leg of the Triple Crown, the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes over 1 1/2 miles on the grass here Oct. 24, is a strong possibility for Mighty Heart.

Carroll sent out the talented maiden Belichick to finish a closing second against the bias in the $1 million Plate. It was just the third start for the $300,000 yearling purchase, and the 87 Beyer he got was much higher than his first two Beyers. He was not nominated to the 1 3/16-mile Prince of Wales.
“We’re going to give him a little time in between races,” Carroll said. “He ran a huge race. I think when you run a big number like that, you need a little time before the next race.”
Carroll said she has no race mapped out for Queen’s Plate favorite Curlin’s Voyage, who faded to fifth after mounting a four-wide bid on the far turn. She had won her two previous outings, most notably the Woodbine Oaks.
“I thought she ran well,” Carroll said. “She just didn’t have the best of trips in a big field.”
Boardroom salvaged third as the favorite in the Ruling Angel Stakes on the Plate undercard, after her rider had to deal with a broken line.
“The pin on the line bent, and it came loose as she left the gate,” Carroll recalled. “We don’t know if she rubbed it on something.”
Carroll said Boardroom will run back in the $100,000 Duchess Stakes, a seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies here Oct. 3.
◗ Carroll will send out probable favorite Sansa’s Vow in Thursday’s featured first-level allowance over 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf.
A 3-year-old filly owned by NK Racing, Sansa’s Vow was a troubled third when debuting March 21 at the Fair Grounds. Carroll said the daughter of Broken Vow sustained a minor injury when winning her only other start, a 1 1/16-mile maiden special on the main turf here June 21.
“She stepped on herself in that race, and it took a little while for her to get over it,” Carroll said. “She’s great now.”
