No date set for Houghton return

C.A. Shoemaker|Aug 30, 2002

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Terry Houghton, who was just five victories behind Russell Baze in the national jockey standings when he was injured in a spill on Aug. 25, will be out of action longer than initially thought.

Houghton's agent, Frank Garoufalis, initially said would be sidelined for about a week after his horse clipped heels and threw him to the ground, where a trailing runner hit him. He was diagnosed with a concussion but no broken bones.

Garoufalis said Friday that Houghton would be transferred to Beaumont Hospital in the Detroit area, where he would undergo rehabilitation for a severe concussion. The prognosis is good, Garoufalis said, but a return date could not be set. Houghton, 31, has won 253 races this year.
