The stakes-placed filly Nimbostratus, claimed for a track-record $150,000 on May 22 at Santa Anita, was recently purchased by SF Racing in advance of Saturday’s Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes at Del Mar. Nimbostratus was claimed in May by Mathilde Powell, wife of trainer Leonard Powell. Wednesday, Leonard Powell said SF Racing purchased Nimbostratus privately earlier this month. SF Racing, owned by the investor George Soros, has co-owned such graded stakes winners such as Authentic, Charlatan, Classier, and Improbable, and was part of the original ownership group of Justify, the 2018 Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year. :: Visit DRF's Del Mar shop for all your handicapping needs: Past performances, picks, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more SF Racing was part of an early partnership involved with Authentic, who later was named 2020 Horse of the Year. Nimbostratus closed from fifth to win an optional claimer at six furlongs on turf by a neck on May 22, and was claimed for $150,000. A French-bred filly by Wooten Bassett, Nimbostratus was third in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf at a mile at Del Mar last September in her American debut. In February, Nimbostratus was third in the Grade 3 Sweet Life Stakes at six furlongs on turf at Santa Anita. Powell cited the residual value of Nimbostratus as a reason for the claim. In the $200,000 San Clemente Stakes, Nimbostratus will be a longshot in a large field that includes Going Global, who is undefeated in four starts this year, all in stakes. Nimbostratus will be ridden by Abel Cedillo, who must be patient in the first half-mile, Powell said. “If she relaxes, she should handle the distance,” Powell said. The San Clemente field is expected to include Dramatizer, Equilove, Freedom Flyer, Jibber Jabber, Karakatside, Madone, Pizazz, and Tetragonal. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports The Saturday program at Del Mar includes the Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf, which has a projected field of seven – Award Winner, Count Again, Restrainedvengence, Say the Word, Smooth Like Strait, United, and Vintage Print. Powell is hoping to start Nimbostratus in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks on Aug. 21. Powell won the 2018 Del Mar Oaks with Fatale Bere. “Hopefully, we can duplicate it,” Powell said. Powell is already having a successful Del Mar meeting, having won the Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile on turf on July 16 with Flashiest. Wednesday, Powell said options for Flashiest include the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby, which is a $1 million race on Aug. 7, or the Grade 3 La Jolla Stakes, a $150,000 race on Aug. 8. “We still haven’t made up our mind if we’ll stay here or go to Saratoga,” Powell said.
