Next up for Secret Spice: Road trip!

ARCADIA, Calif. – If the 2019 Breeders’ Cup remains at its designated site of Santa Anita, all roads lead back home for Secret Spice, whose decisive victory in the Grade 1 Beholder Mile on Saturday stamped her the leader of the California distaff division.

And though Secret Spice could make her next start on the road, the goal is to finish the season right where it began.

The La Troienne Stakes May 3 at Churchill Downs is Secret Spice’s likely next start, according to trainer Richard Baltas and Billy Koch, managing partner of Little Red Feather Racing. At 1 1/16 miles, the Grade 1, $500,000 La Troienne makes more sense than the next distaff stakes at Santa Anita – the Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Margarita, a 1 1/8-mile race on April 27.

“I’d love to stay home, but the whole goal is to improve her residual value,” Koch said early this week at Santa Anita. “We’ll take it race by race, and work backward from the Breeders’ Cup. All three of her wins are here.”

The Breeders’ Cup Distaff, scheduled for Nov. 2 at Santa Anita, is the ultimate goal. Secret Spice’s 2019 campaign may include the Clement Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar, and the Zenyatta Stakes in fall at Santa Anita.

Regardless, Secret Spice proved to be more than one-hit wonder. Her victory in the Beholder earned a 100 Beyer, which was her second triple-digit figure from her last three starts.
