Newmarket: Legatissimo captures English 1000 Guineas
Legatissimo gave jockey Ryan Moore a sweep of the English one-mile classics for 3-year-olds at Newmarket this weekend, winning Sunday’s $620,330 English 1000 Guineas for fillies.
Moore won Saturday’s English 2000 Guineas with Gleneagles. Legatissimo and Gleneagles are both owned by Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Susan Magnier.
Moore, 31, became the first jockey since Kieren Fallon to win both races in the same year.
Legatissimo, a 13-2 chance, won the 1000 Guineas by three-quarters of a length over Lucida, the 9-2 favorite. Legatissimo was at the back of the field of 13 for the first half of the race. Legatissimo lost her footing for a stride with a quarter-mile remaining, but recovered to take the lead in the final 100 yards.
Lucida finished 4 3/4 lengths in front of 9-1 Tiggy Wiggy. Legatissimo, by Danehill Dancer, is trained by David Wachman, and represented the Ireland-based trainer’s first 1000 Guineas winner.
Legatissimo has won 3 of 6 starts. A maiden race winner at 2 last July, Legatissimo won the minor Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes at Gowran Park in Ireland on April 26, a week before the 1000 Guineas.
Legatissimo is considered a candidate for the English Oaks at Epsom Downs on June 5.
Longchamp: Cirrus des Aigles wins Prix Ganay
Cirrus des Aigles, the veteran 9-year-old gelding, won the Group 1 Prix Ganay at Longchamp Racecourse on Sunday for the third time in his career.
Cirrus des Aigles was ridden by Christophe Soumillon, who finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday aboard Mubtaahij.
Cirrus des Aigles was third in the 2011 Prix Ganay and won the race in 2012 and 2014. Sunday, Cirrus des Aigles (7-2) won the $335,610 Prix Ganay by 1 3/4 lengths over Al Kazeem, the 3-2 favorite. Cirrus des Aigles led throughout the race at 1 5/16 miles on turf. Fate, a 5-1 shot, finished third in the field of seven.
Sunday’s win is expected to lead to a start in the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan at about 1 1/8 miles on turf at Longchamp on May 24. Cirrus des Aigles, who is trained by Corinne Barande-Barbe, has won 22 of 62 starts in his career, which began in the autumn of 2008.
