Newmarket: Integral, Esoterique meet again in Sun Chariot
The 5-year-old mare Integral will make her third consecutive appearance in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at a mile on turf for fillies and mares at Newmarket Racecourse in England on Saturday, a race she won last year.
Integral will not be favored, a role that will go to the French shipper Esoterique, who won the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, France, on Aug. 15.
Integral, trained by Michael Stoute, was second in the 2013 Sun Chariot before winning last year in a race in which Esoterique was fourth. Integral has not raced since finishing fifth in the Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.
Esoterique, trained by Andre Fabre, and Integral are part of a field of nine in the $377,000 Sun Chariot Stakes, the most prestigious race on Newmarket’s program. The field also includes Bawina, who was second in the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet for fillies and mares at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Deauville on Aug. 23.
Longchamp: Four Group 2 stakes
There are four Group 2 stakes at Longchamp on Saturday, the eve of a highly anticipated running of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday.
In the $280,000 Prix de Royallieu for fillies and mares at 1 9/16 miles on turf, Candarliya is expected to be an odds-on favorite. She was second to Arc favorite Treve in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille at Longchamp on Sept. 13.
French Navy, unraced since winning the Group 3 Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket in April, is part of a field of eight in the $223,700 Prix Dollar at about 1 3/16 miles on turf. He faces the remarkable 9-year-old gelding Cirrus des Aigles, who won the Prix Dollar in 2010, 2012, and 2013, finished second in 2011, and finished first in 2014 only to be disqualified and placed fifth for causing interference.
Sonnerie and Miss France, the first two finishers of the Prix de la Cochere for fillies and mares at Longchamp on Sept. 6, are part of a field of six in the $223,700 Prix Daniel Wildenstein against males at a mile on turf. Miss France will be favored, and must beat the German Group 2 winner Wild Chief.
In the $223,700 Prix Chaudenay at 1 7/8 miles on turf, the rapidly-improving 3-year-old Vazirabad will be favored to his fourth consecutive race and second stakes.
