ARCADIA, Calif. – Newgate capped a banner Sunday for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Frankie Dettori by wearing down longshot Subsanador to win the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap by a head. The win was Baffert’s third graded stakes, following Imagination in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, and Du Jour in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile. Dettori was winning his second graded stakes, having won on Imagination. In the Big Cap, Dettori settled Newgate ($8.40) in fifth, and basically tracked 3-1 favorite Newgrange all the way. “I followed Victor [Espinoza on Newgrange],” Dettori said. Newgrange called it a day on the far turn and finished sixth. That was fine for Dettori, who said Newgate “was pretty loaded at the quarter pole. “I took him to the outside. I got a bit of a weight pull with some of the horses and I thought I’d get to the line okay,” Dettori said. Newgate carried 121 pounds. Newgate was the first Big Cap win for Dettori. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports The 1 1/4-mile race unfolded unexpectedly, with Subsanador breaking sharply and making an easy lead under Hector Berrios. “I saw the video of [his races] in Argentina, and he liked to go to the lead,” Berrios said. Subsanador, a Group 1 winner in Argentina but a flat fourth in U.S. debut, cruised through fractions of 47.09 seconds and 1:12.15. He briefly shook loose at the quarter pole after a mile in 1:37.05, but Newgate wore him down in 2:03.49 over a main track that produced slow times.  Subsanador finished 2 1/2 lengths in front of the Baffert-trained Reincarnate, followed in order by Highland Falls, Mixto, Newgrange, and Salesman. Newgrange, a two-time stakes winner at the meet, did not have a visible alibi. “I was in a great spot, all the way to the middle of the [far] turn,” Espinoza said. Newgrange pressed the pace third on the outside, then tired. “He just didn’t have it today,” Espinoza said. Newgate received a 99 Beyer Speed Figure, one point lower than the career-best 100 he earned for a win in the Grade 3 Robert Lewis last year. The figure is among the slowest ever for the Santa Anita Handicap. Newgate gave Baffert his sixth Big Cap win, and his first Big Cap since 2014, when Game on Dude won for the third time. “When I first came here, the [Big Cap] was, like, THE race,” Baffert said. “It’s historical.” In the case of Newgate, Baffert has a lightly raced 4-year-old whose Big Cap was his third start back from an extended layoff. Newgate finished second last out in the Grade 2 San Pasqual, and improved Sunday. “He’s a big, fleshy horse,” Baffert said. “He could run back in a couple weeks, he’s that kind of horse.” Or maybe, four weeks. “He’s actually nominated to the Dubai World Cup [March 30], but he had to win this to get in,” Baffert said. “We’ll see what happens, play it by ear. “You have your ups and downs, your peaks and valleys, today was a peak,” Baffert said. Newgate is owned by a partnership that includes SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Stonestreet Stables, Robert Masterson, Jay Schoenfarber, Wave Edge Capital, and Catherine Donovan. Newgate has won three of nine starts. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
