ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The fleet-of-foot shipper New York Thunder justified his skimpy price with an embarrassingly easy victory in Sunday’s $133,500 Woodstock Stakes at Woodbine.
New York Thunder ($2.70) darted out to a clear lead in the six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and set moderate fractions before drawing off for a 7 1/2-length score, in a quick time of 1:08.45.
Ninetyfour Expos, at 14-1, finished a clear second over Stayhonor Goodside, who was followed by Opposites Attract, Ship the Goods and Gran Spirited.
New York Thunder was the first Canadian starter for Florida trainer Jorge Delgado and the first Woodbine mount for Ricardo Santana Jr., who won the 2019 Prince of Wales Stakes on Tone Broke at Fort Erie.
“He broke really good,” Santana Jr. said. “He was really comfortable on the lead. Turning for home, I felt the company come to me, and when I asked him a little bit, he took off.”
In his stakes debut, New York Thunder earned $75,000 for AMO Racing USA. The son of Nyquist has won all three of his starts, including a Dec. 30 allowance at Gulfstream after earning his diploma there Nov. 27.
