New York stallion Bucchero among top sires by mares bred

Barbara D. Livingston Bucchero covered a book of 192 mares in his second season standing in New York.

Bucchero covered a robust book of 192 mares in his second New York season after moving from Florida, according to The Jockey Club’s Report of Mares Bred. It is a rarity for a non-Kentucky stallion to break into the top 20 most active stallions.

Bucchero was the only stallion outside of Kentucky even in the top 50. The next is Ocala Stud’s Win Win Win, who covered 137 mares.

Bucchero, who is led on the track by Grade 1 winner Book’em Danno, is the standard-bearer for Ironhorse Stallions and Ironhorse Racing Stable. Showing its commitment to the future of the industry in New York, the operation recently announced it has established a permanent base at the former Stone Bridge Farm Training Center in Schuylerville.

With Bucchero standing there – perhaps joined by other stallions in the future – and the Ironhorse broodmare band residing there, among other boarders, it will become an integrated hub for breeding, foaling, raising young stock, and training and race preparation.

In a release, Ironhorse noted that in addition to supporting the New York program, such an operation will also create jobs in the state and keep investment dollars local.

“This location isn’t just a facility – it’s a statement,” managing partner Harlan Malter said in a release. “To be able to breed, foal, raise, and campaign in one unified base is a dream for any stallion and racing operation.

“It allows us to keep breeding capital, talent, and energy right here in New York, while continuing to collaborate with the important programs in Kentucky and Florida. This farm gives breeders and owners every reason to stay, and it shows that world-class breeding and racehorse development can thrive right here on home turf.”
