Nine new names are in the lineup for Pool 3 of the 2020 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens at noon Eastern on Friday for the customary three-day run. Pool 3 coincides with the only futures pool toward the 2020 Kentucky Oaks, with an Oaks-Derby double future wager being offered for the third year. The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, has been pegged as the 9-2 morning-line favorite in Pool 3 by Churchill Downs linemaker Mike Battaglia, with Tiz the Law the shortest individually listed interest at 8-1. Then come Ete Indien and Nadal, both at 10-1, followed by Authentic, Charlatan, and Sole Volante, all at 12-1. The new names for Pool 3 are Charlatan, Ete Indien, Major Fed, Modernist, Royal Act, Silver Prospector, Sole Volante, Spa City, and Wells Bayou. Gone from Pool 2 are Anneau d’Or, Dennis’ Moment, Exaulted, Gold Street, Palm Springs, Premier Star, Silver State, Structor, and Violent City. Win and exacta wagering are available, with odds and will-pays locked in only when the pool closes at 6 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. Seven of the Pool 3 horses are expected in action Saturday – Chance It, Sole Volante, and Spa City in the Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs; and Authentic, Honor A. P., Storm the Court, and Thousand Words in the San Felipe at Santa Anita. A third Derby qualifying-points race, the Gotham at Aqueduct, did not attract any Pool 3 horses. The field closed as the 6-5 favorite in Pool 1, which drew total handle of $350,312 when held Nov. 28-Dec. 1 in tandem with the Derby Sires Future Wager. The field was the 2-1 favorite in Pool 2, which drew handle of $590,911 for the wagering period of Feb. 7-9. The fourth and final pool will be offered April 3-5. Combined handle on Pool 3 in 2019 was $385,463, down 2.4 percent from the corresponding pool in 2018. Last year in Pool 3, the field closed as the 9-2 favorite, while the eventual Derby winner, Country House, was 29-1, far lower than his 65-1 price on Derby Day. In Pool 3 in 2018, the eventual winner, Justify, closed at 6-1. The record for handle in a single pool is $631,304, set in 2012, while the record for aggregate handle in a single year is $1,893,353, set in 2018. In the 2020 Kentucky Oaks futures, the field is pegged as the 6-1 morning-line favorite, followed by Venetian Harbor (8-1), Donna Veloce (10-1), Finite (10-1), and Tonalist’s Shape (10-1). Three Oaks qualifying-points events this weekend are expected to draw a number of individual interests, with the most notable being Donna Veloce going Sunday in the Santa Ysabel at Santa Anita. The other Oaks preps are the Honeybee at Oaklawn and the Busher at Aqueduct, both Saturday. The Oaks futures will close at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, or a half-hour after Pool 3 closes. Last year in the Oaks pool, Bellafina closed as a 9-2 favorite, while the eventual winner, Serengeti Empress, closed at 11-1, less than her 13-1 price on Oaks Day. Combined win and exacta handle was $87,651. The first year for Oaks futures was 2003. Last year, the Oaks-Derby double handled $78,456. The $2 payoff for the combination of Serengeti Empress and Country House was $655.20. In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination. Real-time odds and will-pays are available through various modes, including on television monitors at tracks and wagering outlets, as well as at kentuckyderby.com. The Oaks is set for May 1 and the Derby for May 2. Kentucky Derby Pool 3   Horse Trainer P1 P2 P3 M/L 1. Authentic B. Baffert 50-1 15-1 12-1 2. Basin S. Asmussen 38-1 39-1 30-1 3. Chance It S.
