New Economy rebounds in My Charmer

Jean Raftery New Economy, with jockey Rosemary Homeister, Jr. aboard, wins the $100,000 My Charmer Handicap at Calder on Saturday.

MIAMI - One year ago, New Economy used a fifth-place finish in Calder's $100,000 My Charmer Handicap as a stepping-stone to the most important victory of her career three weeks later in the Grade 2 La Prevoyante Handicap. This year New Economy didn't wait for the La Prevoyante, instead rallying to a half-length decision over 2-1 favorite Something Ventured in Saturday's Grade 3 My Charmer.

Trainer Graham Motion on Saturday reunited New Economy with jockey Rosemary Homeister Jr., who rode her last year in both the My Charmer and La Prevoyante. Allowed to settle early in midpack, New Economy advanced strongly around the second turn, came a bit wide into the stretch, and then overtook Something Ventured near midstretch to win going away.

Something Ventured was well placed just off the early pace of Ivanavinalot and gradually wore that rival down once settling into the stretch. Ivanavinalot held on to finish third in her turf debut.

Lost Appeal, Love Sting, Dame Sylvieguilhem, Hermans Honor, Carib Lady, Light Dancer, Sierra Lady, Stay Forever, and Ms Brookski rounded out the complete order of finish.

New Economy, a 5-year-old daughter of Red Ransom, is owned by her breeder, Robert S. Evans. She paid $16.80 after covering 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.97 over a firm turf course.

The victory was the first in five starts this season for New Economy, and her first since the La Prevoyante.

"She missed the entire summer due to a bad foot abscess," Motion said. "It was one of the worst I've ever seen. I kind of rushed her to get back for the E.P. Taylor, and the ground was on the soft side up there, and she really likes firm ground.

"Rosemary gets along with her very well," Motion added, "and we'll definitely bring her back for the La Prevoyante."

The Grade 2, $150,000 La Prevoyante Handicap will be run at 1 1/2 miles on turf Dec. 27.
