New Detroit track names racing chief

C.A. Shoemaker|Jun 11, 2008

Denver Beckner, the horse identifier at Pimlico for the past eight seasons, has been named racing secretary for the inaugural meet at Pinnacle Race Course in suburban Detroit, now under construction and scheduled to open on July 18.

The track will be part of a $142 million entertainment complex being built by the owners of Post It Stable, Jerry and Lisa Campbell. A one-mile dirt track and 15 barns with 600 stalls are expected to be ready by opening day. A seven-furlong turf track is planned for later, along with a clubhouse, grandstand, and 15 additional barns.

There has been no Thoroughbred racing in Detroit since 1998 with the closing of Detroit Race Course.
