New Boss rated like a seasoned route horse while comfortably carrying her speed to an easy win making her two-turn debut in the $75,000 Allen “Black Cat” Lacombe Stakes on Saturday at Fair Grounds. Switched to turf from dirt in December, New Boss improved markedly and finished a good second in first-level allowance competition while kept sprinting by trainer Bret Calhoun, easily winning her second try in the same kind of race. Two and a half months passed before Calhoun found a suitable spot, the one-mile Lacombe, and New Boss still was on her game. Allowed to control a slow pace, going a half-mile in a tepid 50.26, New Boss relaxed nicely under Adam Beschizza and sprinted home, going her final quarter mile in 23.45 while opening an insurmountable lead between the quarter pole and the stretch call. Saranya, the 8-5 favorite, made some late progress but never came close to threatening the winner, checking in 2 3/4 lengths behind New Boss. Earth Strike finished third as the top three betting choices filled out the trifecta. :: Bet horse racing on DRF Bets. Double Your First Deposit Up to $250. Join Now. New Boss is by Street Boss out of Denali Dreamscape, by Corinthian, is owned by Barry and Carol Conrad, and was bred in Kentucky by Hinkle Farms. * Offspring ($8.40) got first run on Net a Bear and won the $60,000 Red Camelia Stakes for older Louisiana-bred fillies and mares by 1 3/4 lengths. Net a Bear finished well from last in the eight-horse field but the pace was slow and benefited Offspring, who made her move before the quarter pole. She ran one mile on turf in 1:39.80 while ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr. for trainer Joe Sharp and Oak Tree Stable. Offspring is by Into Mischief out of Pioneer Girl, by Pioneering.
