Nevin enjoys graded stakes double over weekend

ELMONT, N.Y. – Michelle Nevin doesn’t have as many 2-year-olds as trainer Todd Pletcher – nor does just about anyone else – but last weekend, Nevin won just as many graded stakes for 2-year-olds as did Pletcher.
On Saturday, Nevin won the Grade 1 Frizette with By the Moon, and she came right back Sunday to take the Grade 2 Matron with Paulassilverlining.
“Best weekend ever,” Nevin said when asked to describe the feeling of winning those two stakes in 24 hours.
By the Moon gave Nevin her first Grade 1 stakes win, and she will be Nevin’s first starter in the Breeders’ Cup when she runs in the Juvenile Fillies. In the Breeders’ Cup, By the Moon will have to prove she can handle a dry track as well as two turns. The Frizette was run over a sloppy track at a one-turn mile.
“All her works that led us to believe she was a nice filly have been over a dry track,” Nevin said. “We never breezed her on a wet track. I don’t feel like [two turns] should be a major issue.”
Paulassilverlining rallied to win Sunday’s $200,000 Matron by 1 1/4 lengths.
She is not Breeders’ Cup bound, but she could be headed for a race like the Grade 3, $250,000 Tempted or be kept sprinting. She is a half-sister to the Grade 1 Carter winner Dads Caps.
“From her last race to now, she just changed,” Nevin said. “She’s more aggressive. She was on her toes in the paddock, a handful. She was ready. She is a filly that could stretch out; she’s not strictly a sprinter.”
Paulassilverlining is owned by her breeder, Vincent Scuderi.
