Chalon figured to be a solid favorite in the $100,000 Skipat Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday, but when she scratched it was anyone’s game. Bronx Beauty was sent off as the 2-1 favorite in the six-furlong race for fillies and mares and was followed in the betting by Never Enough Time, Liza Star, and Bye Bye J, who were all 5-2. When the dust cleared, the home team of trainer Mike Trombetta, owner-breeder R. Larry Johnson, and jockey Julian Pimentel, who team up together on a daily basis on the Maryland circuit, came away with a well-earned victory by a determined Never Enough Time. :: Want to get your Past Performances for free? She outsprinted Liza Star for the lead while racing along the inside in the six-horse field, then persevered through the stretch under a drive by Pimentel to notch a three-quarter-length victory. Bronx Beauty, an eight-time stakes winner, edged Bye Bye J for second by a head. Bronx Beauty was forced to race three wide the entire trip and didn’t punch home as hard as usual while making her third start in 26 days. She came into the Skipat off a 4 1/4-length win in the Regret Stakes at Monmouth on Sept. 13. Never Enough Time paid $7 and was timed in 1:10.42. She defeated Chalon by a length in the Alma North Stakes at Laurel Park in her most recent race Sept. 5. “We drew a good scratch today,” Trombetta said referring to Chalon. “I told Julian, ‘If anyone wants to take the lead from you, take it to them and make them earn it.’ ” Nobody did. Never Enough Time, whom Johnson bred, is now 5 for 9 in her career. She was impressive winning her first two starts in the spring of 2019, then following two additional starts went to the sidelines for just under a year. Since returning in June, she is 3 for 5 and an improving two-time stakes winner. :: Start earning weekly cashback on your wagering today. Click to learn more. Hilltop Stakes Trainer Mike Maker claimed Evil Lyn for $40,000 at Churchill Downs in May. On Saturday, she made her fourth consecutive stakes start for Maker and broke through with her first win for her new connections in the $100,000 Hilltop, a mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies. Hollywood Hoopla, 82-1, broke running from her outside post in the 11-horse field, carving out splits of 23.94, 48.50 and 1:14.98 over the yielding course while being tracked by 3-1 Caravel. On the far turn, Caravel moved up to challenge, and Horacio Karamanos, who had reserved his mount outside horses early, turned Evil Lyn loose. Entering the stretch, Evil Lyn engaged Caravel for the lead three wide as Hollywood Hoopla began to back up. Evil Lyn came away with the lead in midstretch and despite getting weary late was able to hold off the belated late run of 5-2 favorite Vigilantes Way by a half-length. Caravel ended up another 2 1/2 lengths back in third. Evil Lyn returned $9.40 as the third choice while covering the mile in 1:42.25 over a demanding course. “The first couple of races for us, she was pretty keen, even in her last race,” said Maker, who was on hand. “Today she got an outside trip, an excellent ride.” Evil Lyn is owned by the Paradise Farms Corporation and David Staudacher. The daughter of Wicked Strong improved her record to 5 for 13. In her first three starts following the claim, she finished fourth in the Grade 2 Appalachian at Keeneland, third in the Indiana Grand, and eighth in the Music City at Kentucky Downs.
