Net a Bear points to Louisiana Cup Distaff

The Net a Bear show is coming to Louisiana Downs.
The mare who picked up her 10th stakes win this month at Evangeline Downs to improve her 2022 record to 5 for 7 is targeting the Louisiana Cup Day program on Aug. 6.
Trainer Allen Landry said Net a Bear is being pointed to the Distaff. She won the 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares last year. Net a Bear will be moving back into the Louisiana-bred ranks after defeating open company by a head in the off-the-turf Opelousas Stakes at her base of Evangeline on July 1.
“That was a thriller for us,” Landry said. “We’re still excited. She knows where the wire’s at.”
It was the second straight stakes win at the Evangeline meet for Net a Bear, and both came under jockey Timothy Thornton.

“Timmy does such a great job – knows her like a book,” Landry said.
Louisiana Downs announced last week that the six Louisiana Cup stakes will receive a purse boost to $67,000 each. They had been worth $50,000 each. The divisional races will all be run Aug. 6.
Landry said multiple stakes winner Vodka Gimlet is being pointed to the Louisiana Cup Turf Classic. It also will be run over 1 1/16 miles on the grass. Vodka Gimlet will be making his turf debut. He is a two-time stakes winner around two turns.
One of those wins came over runner-up Brian’s Iron Mike, who is being considered for the Louisiana Cup Sprint, Landry said.
